An Tale of Surprising Kindness: The Time a University Student Allowed Me to Stay on Her Dorm Floor

During 2006, My journey took me to the Australian capital for a medical school interview. I assumed to arrange a place to stay upon arrival, however when I arrived, a large conference was taking place and every single budget hostels and affordable lodging were fully booked.

Hailing from the city-state of Singapore, the idea crossed my mind perhaps I could bed down in the terminal – but quickly found the local airport, not like the one back home, is not open all night. With no idea what my next move should be and getting a bit desperate, I boarded public transport and started wandering towards the casino, believing I could pass those hours in an establishment that was open all night. That wouldn’t put me in the best shape to succeed at the admissions interview the next morning, but as a cash-strapped student, luxury accommodation was impossible.

Our society requires more folks who show such kindness.

Apparently, I appeared confused because a female student saw me walking aimlessly through downtown and asked if I was OK. I recounted the story of my accommodation crisis and without hesitation she said I could crash on the floor of her dormitory at ANU – a perfect solution, given that my my interview would take place the next morning. She went further by offering me some free dinner: one of the filled rolls she had taken home her work shift. I was able to use warm shower facilities and a secure location to rest for the evening.

With hindsight, I now understand what a big chance she undertook being a woman letting a guy who was a complete stranger sleep on her floor. Back then I was in my own unawareness and not even thinking to the potential danger. Now, as a father, it astounds me she took that chance – yet deeply appreciative.

I never did go to the Australian National University, and I never saw that kind stranger again, but I’ve never forgotten her amazing act of generosity. It is my wish karma has repaid her good deed abundantly. Our society requires more individuals like that woman.
