Approximately 50 automobiles have been smeared with what seems to be blood from a person in the Germany's town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, as reported by law enforcement.
Cars, exterior walls and mailboxes were defaced, occasionally with swastikas, they announced in a release.
Police say they were alerted late on Wednesday evening, when a individual observed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued substance.
The substance had been placed in the form of a Nazi symbol, they added.
Law enforcement then located many other marked cars and house walls in the nearby vicinity.
These symbols are banned in Germany under regulations prohibiting the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.
Law enforcement say initial examinations show the substance was likely human blood.
"At present there remains no lead as to its source; officials are not yet cognizant of any injuries in association with the occurrence," they stated.
Local authorities announced they were trying "to unravel the mystery" and have asked to the residents for information.
A high-ranking representative commented the vandalism left him without words and had to be solved quickly.
"This incident affects the center of Hanau and revives the pain of the far-right terrorist attack five years ago," he stated on social media, recalling the murder of nine individuals by a assailant targeting residents of immigrant origin in five years prior.
