"Any idea when you're chatting with the Haim sisters?" a message reads. "My request was to ask if I can be their fourth member."

There is only one problem: I also wants to be Haim's newest recruit. Furthermore, we are not alone. Several famous admirers have also petitioned for the position.

One thing is obvious a special quality is going on. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana launched their musical journey playing gigs at neighborhood delis with their family. Today, they are repeated Grammy nominees.

Similar to the best bands, they're a inseparable gang. Their visuals repeatedly show them walking in harmony down the streets of Los Angeles. During performances, they perform with such unfettered exuberance you inevitably think, "I'd love to be involved in that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that fans told us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I picked up a guitar'," says Alana, the youngest of the trio. "That is the biggest compliment. That's an award in itself. We have succeeded if we can motivate people to start a band."

"Therefore everyone gets an invitation to be the next member of Haim."

Award Recognition

The band are speaking from a break, where they're resting up after an lengthy tour in for their fourth album, I Quit.

They're right now processing the news it's been nominated for a top rock honor at the Grammys – with Haim the pioneering all-female band ever in contention for the award.

"I follow the nominations every year, so it almost feels like a surreal movie when your name is called," says Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this correctly or am I hallucinating'?"

The weight of the nomination resonates with the trio.

"We really set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a huge step," adds Alana. "However we're just thankful for the women that came before us."

Heartbreak and Laughter

The record emerged from a phase of personal change. All three sisters ended up single, and the music inhabits that odd in-between place where you're happy to be free, but not quite ready to move on.

The words follow endings and goodbyes. The sisters seek love, but not the kind of love they've had. You can hear them determining in real life who they are becoming.

"I love summary, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a mantra. You have to make an effort in blocking the criticism and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Development of Music

That recent confidence demanded a new sound – more organic and immediate than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that was founded on the drums.

"The drum sound is such a specific thing, and I am so passionate about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our memoir," quips Alana. "Our motto is, our albums don't start until we find the ideal drum sound."

Experiences and Shared Laughter

The band's honesty fueled the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters revealed some of their romantic misadventures.

Someone broke up with Este over a medical concern. Alana shared a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"Experiencing these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no hope," explains Alana. "Thus to be able to laugh at those stories and hear others tell you even crazier stories, it's so amazing."

An Assured Path

One can easily sense a shift in the band. These days, Haim are more assured of their place in the rock pantheon.

They're top-billed acts, with chart-topping albums and an global following.

But the sister act will forever be their primary priority.

"My sisters and I have been performing since I was little," concludes Alana. "It's like no other path that we were supposed to do. And I'm really thankful we've gotten here and we're still going strong."
