The authoritarian administration has condemned the Washington of an act of "foreign aggression," stating that former President Donald Trump allegedly ordered strikes against the South American country. In an public declaration, the government asserted that attacks had targeted the capital and several other provinces: Miranda state, La Guaira, and Aragua.

"The primary goal of these strikes is to take control of Venezuela's strategic resources, especially its crude oil and mineral wealth," the government asserted.

Caracas called on the global community to censure the operations, which it described a "clear infringement of global law" that placed numerous of civilians in peril.

Accounts of Blasts and Defense Bases Hit

Eyewitnesses described experiencing approximately multiple explosions around 2:00 AM in the morning. Citizens in different neighborhoods reportedly rushed into the streets.

"Everything shook. It was terrifying. We experienced blasts and aircraft in the distance," stated one witness.

Black smoke was reported rising from key defense sites in the city: the La Carlota airbase airfield and the Fuerte Tiuna base compound, where leader Nicolás Maduro is believed to live.

International Response

The president of bordering Colombia, Gustavo Petro, stated on a social platform that "At this moment they are bombing Venezuela... bombing it with projectiles." He requested an immediate emergency session of the Security Council.

The Colombian government, which recently joined the Security Council, announced it would initiate operational plans at its border with its neighbor.

Preceding Events

These alleged attacks come after a prolonged campaign of pressure by the US against the Venezuelan government. Since August, authorities reported a major US military presence off the country's Caribbean coast and a series of airstrikes on ships suspected of illegal activities.

Venezuela's government has announced "the implementation of external disturbance" and ordered all national defense plans to be implemented. It has also urged its supporters to mobilize and "reject this imperialist act."

The White House and the US Department of Defense have not promptly commented on inquiries for a statement regarding the events.
