Ghostface Original Star Matthew Lillard Fears He Could Spoil the Franchise with the Seventh Installment.

The highly anticipated horror film Scream 7 is set to arrive in theaters in the coming year, and it is gearing up for a major gathering of familiar faces. This new chapter signals the legendary return of Neve Campbell as survivor Sidney Prescott, after sitting out the last entry. She will, per tradition, be alongside Courtney Cox as reporter Gail Weathers, but they won't be the only beloved characters making a comeback.

"Coming back to a role you portrayed in your twenties when you're 55 was a challenge that gave me sleepless nights," the actor reveals.

An Unexpected Comeback for Fallon Characters

It has been established that a trio of distinct characters from past films are slated to reappear in this latest sequel, even though meeting their demise in prior movies. The precise method of their resurrection is still unclear. Fans should prepare for the return of the beloved and nearly unkillable cop Dewey Riley, the director and Scream 3 antagonist Roman Bridger, and a member of the original murderous duo, Stu Macher.

The Weight of Legendary Legacy

For Matthew Lillard, returning to the franchise for the first time since a brief cameo is a dream come true, though he is apprehensive about the audience response. The actor clearly remembers the precise instant he received the news from the original writer.

"I remember the phone call. I recall the small talk. I remember him asking. That moment is indelibly imprinted on my psyche," he states. "So I'm incredibly honored to be back. I'm thrilled to be back."

Stu Macher has attained cult status in the years since the original film was released, which left Lillard feeling quite nervous.

"The reality is, that's a role that is infamous, for better or worse," he explains. "A part that is now represented in each and every Ghostface mask that walks around every Halloween."

The Fear of Disappointing the Fans

Now that production has wrapped, Lillard is waiting like the rest of us to see the final product. He confesses to feeling significant anxiety about hoping not to be the one who ruins the popular franchise.

"It's either a success and people are excited to have you, or it's a miss," Lillard points out. "At the start, I don't know if the film will gonna work. I don't know if people want to see me. I've definitely seen enough people state and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they going back to this trope?' So the reality is that I feel a lot of pressure to not ruin the franchise. I don't want people leaving Scream 7 and saying, 'Well, that was terrible, and Matthew Lillard was the reason.'"

Speculation and Anticipation Run High

While countless longtime fans are excited for Stu's return, the big question of how he and the others come back remains. Perhaps they live rent-free in Sidney's mind, like a prior storyline. Alternatively, perhaps they are in some way still living in a bizarre communal situation. The possibility of a self-referential story, inspired by classic horror movies, also exists.

Moviegoers will discover the truth when Scream 7 debuts in theaters.
