Information Available About the Those Lost of the Bondi Shooting

A minimum of 16 individuals lost their lives and more than 40 were hurt when gunmen opened fire at a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local authorities have labeled a act of terrorism.

According to the most recent information, authorities have confirmed the number of fatalities stands at 16, encompassing one of the suspected gunmen. Moreover, 42 injured people were taken to the hospital.

Those who died have not yet been formally identified, but authorities state their ages span from 10 and 87 years of age.

Below are the individuals who have been identified so far.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he served as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.

She described the moments before the attack, saying they had been standing together when the gunfire erupted. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having endured immense hardship in their childhood. They had later moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Officially, the Foreign Minister expressed that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the message read.

One Child

A child who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was also killed in the incident, according to reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospitals, many are still under care, with five in critical condition. The injured include two officers who responded to the attack.

A wounded man is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Called a local hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. It has been reported he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.

In a message, he recounted the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the actions of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He said he heard “a large number” of gunshots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
