Adrian Dunbar are set to reprise their characters in the popular crime series

The beloved police drama Line of Duty will make a comeback for its 7th season, announced by the broadcaster.

An upcoming six-episode season written by Jed Mercurio will begin filming in Northern Ireland this spring, as confirmed by the production team.

The actress expressed excitement about the comeback, stating she was "thrilled" about the series' return. Adrian Dunbar added, "What a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be reuniting together next year."

The previous series concluded in recent years with a final episode that attracted over 17 million viewers. Speculation about a new season have been widespread for some time, but confirmation only came recently.

New Challenges for AC-12

The seventh season will open with AC-12 no longer existing and renamed as the new police oversight body, as revealed by the announcement.

Steve Arnott, Kate Fleming, and Adrian Dunbar's part remain tasked to tackle misconduct within the police force.

The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, these officers are assigned their "most sensitive case so far."

Fresh Face and Complex Case

A new character, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer known for takedowns of organized crime, is accused of abusing his position to become a offender.

Yet, this investigation might serve as a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still active in the shadows, plot details hinted.

Speaking about the renewal, Jed Mercurio said: "All cast and crew feels enormous gratitude to the dedicated viewers."

"It's an honor to have had so many fans track the ups and downs of the unit over multiple series and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a seventh season."

He added: "Corruption in the UK was thought to be over while Line of Duty was off air, so I've been compelled to use my creativity."

Actor Responses

The Scottish actor described being part of the police drama as "the role of a career".

"Beyond the show's success but the people I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."

"I'm excited to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he said.

The Nottingham-born actress stated: "It goes without saying I'm so excited the show is back! Can't wait to work with Jed, Martin and Dunbar again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"

The veteran actor commented: "As we count down the unit return, what a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming next year."

"Delighted with the announcement and anticipating those unexpected twists and turns."

Show History

The drama launched in the early 2010s and evolved into a highly successful television series of the last decade, featuring notable actors such as Thandiwe Newton.

Broadcasters has not yet announced exactly the new season will premiere.

The finale of series six brought the long-running storyline about the search for criminal mastermind known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and the creative team indicated at the time there were no plans for additional seasons.

However, the network announced on this week that a new season is now being produced.
