Taliban Used Left-Behind UK Gear to Track Down Local Nationals That Served Alongside Allied Forces, Inquiry Is Told

A confidential source has disclosed an official investigation that British authorities abandoned confidential devices allowing Afghanistan's rulers to locate Afghans who worked with allied troops.

Information Leak Endangers Numerous at Risk

Person A, identified as Person A, explained that Afghans affected by the data leak were told to move homes and change their contact details to protect themselves from militant forces.

Members of Parliament are currently examining official response of a serious breach of confidential data affecting approximately 19k Afghans who had requested to move to the United Kingdom to flee the Taliban.

Data Disclosure Occurred

A data file with private information, such as identities, contact details and in some cases family information, was accidentally leaked by an official stationed at British military command in early 2022.

The leak came to light months later, when details of several individuals who had applied to move to Britain appeared on Facebook.

“There seems to be a misunderstanding that Afghan rulers lack the same sort of facilities that allied forces use,” the whistleblower testified to the committee.

“We left it all behind in Afghanistan; they possess it. If they have mobile details, they can locate your precise location. That is what the unit accomplished.”

When questioned about if militant forces owned advanced decryption, the whistleblower stated: “They've got everything.”

Aftermath of the Data Breach

Initial findings submitted to the inquiry suggested that at least 49 relatives and associates of individuals impacted by the leak had been murdered.

A superinjunction concerning the leak was implemented in August 2023 and blocked any information regarding the matter from being made public until recently.

Security Recommendations

Due to legal constraints, Person A and the aid group she collaborated with informed affected households they were working with that they had “suspicions that somebody's phone had been breached”.

“We recommended that they relocate when possible and altered their contact details. These represented the primary information that, should militant forces obtained these details, would lead to them being traced,” she said.

Challenged Assessments

The whistleblower contested that government assessment carried out by a former official had been incorrect to state that the possession of the information by militant forces was “not significantly alter an individual's existing exposure”.

“The important fact is that these individuals are not standing up to the authorities; they remain concealed. The primary issue involves past work history.”

Person A described disturbing violence endured by concerned people, involving electric shock torture, interrogation techniques, and violent assaults.

“We have had young kids who have had their arms broken to try to get households to disclose hiding places,” Person A stated.
