Sir Gareth Southgate has stated that he is not pursuing a return to football management, pointing out that it would be challenging to match the unique sense of purpose he experienced as head of the Three Lions.

He indicated his plan to dedicate his efforts toward engaging the youth and combating what he labeled a pervasive negative narrative currently existing in the country.

Pursuing New Avenues Outside of The Sport

In a recent radio interview, he was questioned on talk linking him with available jobs in the English football and abroad.

“I’ve had one of the most incredible jobs in football which also had a higher purpose because it was my country,” he responded. “That’s going to be very hard to replicate. Having had 37 years in football I’m enjoying finding other areas where I think I might be able to make a difference.”

Dedication to Positive Examples

Ahead of the release of his upcoming book, his leadership-focused book, the author stated that he is “very passionate” about setting examples for teenagers, drawing on lessons from his time as England’s men’s football manager from 2016 and 2024, as well as his role as a father.

Southgate feels that his journey leading the national team, during which the team transformed from being strongly criticized to broadly loved, holds broader applications.

“At the beginning, there was a major gap between the team and the fans,” he explained. “The public viewed the players as egotistical, yet we successfully reversed that image. The squad’s ability to connect diverse communities was truly powerful.”

Family Life and Shaping the Next Generation

Reflecting on his role as a parent, he observed: “Every parent aims to provide a solid foundation, yet there comes a time when children stop heeding parental advice. I’ve faced this at home, just like others, and I believe this area is critically important.”

He added: “Currently, a pessimistic story dominates national discourse, and we must offer youth optimism and direction. The country is full of potential, but young individuals require positive influences and supportive peers, as these choices shape their futures profoundly.”

Togetherness Beyond Division

The former manager stressed that “there is more that unites us [in the UK] than divides us” but that the public discourse often highlights disagreement.

“The reasons for public dissatisfaction are clear,” he commented. “Financial struggles affect numerous communities, fueling calls for transformation. Yet, I’ve observed the capacity to bring the nation together. During the pandemic, I witnessed neighbors helping each other—that’s when the UK excels, demonstrating strength and unity in adversity.”

His forthcoming book, the book Dear England, is expected to provide additional perspectives on leadership and national identity drawn from his notable career.
