People have assembled throughout the country to commemorate the second anniversary since the Hamas-led offensive on that fateful day in October 2023, as negotiations continued in the neighboring country over an end to the hostilities in Gaza.

The assault saw over 1,200 people dead and 251 others abducted back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the most most lethal day for the Jewish community since the World War II.

Israel responded by initiating a armed campaign in Gaza which has taken over 67,000 people, based on figures from the area's Hamas-run health ministry. Its numbers are seen as accurate by the United Nations and other global organizations.

"The aggressive adversaries have caused great damage, but they have not defeated us," Benjamin Netanyahu remarked on Tuesday.

He also promised to "achieve all the aims of the war: the return of all the kidnapped, the destruction of the Hamas government and the assurance that Gaza will never again present a danger to Israel".

Memorial Events Across Israel

The national leadership postponed formal memorials until October 16th - after the completion of the festive season - but gatherings still were held throughout the country on that day.

A remembrance service for the families of people killed in the Hamas incident was conducted in Tel Aviv. Arranged by the affected families, it was aired across Israeli television channels.

Hours earlier, a moment of silence was observed throughout the country.

Ceasefire Meetings in Egypt

At the same time, Israeli and Hamas representatives met in the North African tourist destination of the negotiation venue for a second day of indirect talks to review the terms of the plan.

A prominent delegate familiar with the talks revealed that an night meeting of mediated discussions started at 19:00 Cairo time.

The representative said the earlier meeting finished without tangible results, due to differences over the recommended Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas seeks to make certain Israel does not recommence fighting after the initial stage of the agreement.

He noted that the negotiations are "challenging and have not yet achieve any major advancement," but pointed out that mediators are working hard to reduce the differences between the both parties.

Key Matters in Discussions

  • A permanent truce
  • The swap of the prisoners still detained by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
  • The pullout of troops from Gaza
  • Plans for relief supplies deliveries
  • Future management of the region

Public Sentiment

In the city's Hostages Square that day, 29-year-old Hagar - whose family member survived the incident on the outdoor event, where 378 people were lost their lives and many more were captured by Hamas gunmen - shared: "Nowhere seems like home now and until each abducted person return not a single person will feel safe."

"Once we see everyone home returned, we can feel relief once more. Then we can begin to recover," she concluded.

Outside the leader's home in the capital, people assembled to show their backing for the families of the abducted. Israel states 48 remain in detention in Gaza, twenty of whom are thought to be surviving.

Protester a participant remarked: "It's necessary do any agreement needed for the abducted to be released. But we sincerely need promises that we will be safe."

Research now frequently demonstrate that about the majority of Israelis want the conflict to end in return for the release of the captives.

Palestinian Situation

At the location of the gathering, those paying respects came together to pay their respects.

From there, the sound of aerial bombardments and artillery could be heard just a short distance away in Gaza, where witnesses reported the intense Israeli bombardment continued.

In the urban center, bombardments were reported in the dawn of Tuesday in the western district, area and Nasr neighbourhoods and in the east side district of Sheikh Radwan, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwestern area.

"When the dusk arrives, the anxiety appears with it," evacuated Gaza City resident a local woman, whose young son was died by an Israeli bombing previously, explained.

"My family are terrified of the attacks. During nighttime we are sleeping together, clinging, especially my youngest child who puts his head on me all night."

"Continuously we monitor the reports to see the situation. And I'm concerned that this truce will not be achieved and that the fighting will return to us."

Humanitarian Situation

The medical facility in Gaza City said it had accepted the corpses of six people by the afternoon, including several who died in an Israeli strike in the south part district.

Another medical facility in the south region of Khan Younis indicated two more dead people had been delivered. An individual was killed by Israeli forces while looking for aid to the south region, health workers reported.
