Although not quite at the equivalent scale as pardoning festive fowl, but the mayor of Miami-Dade experienced a presidential-style act this week by ritually sparing the life of a pig named Six Seven.

Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.

“This pig is innocent. She deserves this act of mercy. She has committed zero crimes,” Levine Cava said in a speech with inescapable allusions to the extraordinary and sizable number of pardons issued since the beginning of a second term in office.

“Unless you count eating 6 or 7 apples per day,” she went on. “Let this swine have a prosperous future away from worry.”

This ceremony, simultaneously observing and challenging the local cultural practice of feasting on pork during the holidays, was created to replicate the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.

The animal, contributed by a local firefighter, was named for the popular vernacular phrase of young people shouting “6-7” – originating from a musical verse – often seemingly at random. The phrase became so pervasive that a major dictionary recently made “6-7” its top term for the year.

A Peaceful Retirement

Six Seven the pig is now set to enjoy its days at a farm sanctuary “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the organizers' announcement.

“This swine clemency has become a cherished method to begin the holiday season,” said Eric Castellanos, in a notably cheerful message.

“It embodies the essence of Miami: joyful, multicultural, and grounded in customs that bring people together. Each year, we are delighted to mark tradition and kindness in a way only Miami can.”

Attendees enjoyed a vegetarian menu of croquettes and strong coffee as they toasted Six Seven’s big moment.
