This Special Release Pokémon Card Seeks to Be Super Effective Against Speculators

Marking the arrival of the fascinating new book Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology, an exciting partnership is underway. The Pokémon Company alongside the Natural History Museum will launch a temporary store featuring exclusive merchandise. Fans will find products like plush toys, art prints, and writing supplies that are inspired by the institution's aesthetic. The big draw, though, will be a specially made Pikachu card, offered as a gift with purchase at the pop-up. The store is scheduled from on-site at the museum and online from January 26 to April 19.

Pokécology That Inspires the Partnership

Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology represents a much-awaited tome filled with beautiful artwork depicting creatures in their wild environments. It's essentially like the kind of research an in-world scientist might publish after trainers provide field notes, alternatively what Charles Darwin could have sketched if the Galapagos teemed with Pidgeys instead of finches. Part of the charm lies in the book's scholarly approach, presenting Pokémon as a legitimate subject for inquiry. Author Yoshinari Yonehara and illustrator Chihiro Kinoshita each possess doctorate degrees in ecology and behavioral science.

Why This Promo Card Different

The company regularly to issue special edition cards celebrating major tournaments or brand collaborations. Many such promotional cards often feature the iconic electric rodent who serves as the series face. What distinguishes this latest museum card however, is the distinctly bigger size. Although precise specs have not been publicly disclosed, its distribution is guaranteed to be strictly limited, with customers able to get just one card per purchase.

Curbing Speculator Interest

Per a company announcement, a portion of the pop-up items may also be available beyond the institution itself. But, broader availability will only be specific stores in the UK. Importantly, fans will not be able to purchase the card through the official web shop. While reseller interest is a given, it appears they will have a difficult time stockpiling large numbers this time around. If you're unable to attend, there is an alternative like fossil-themed display headed to the Windy City in the coming months.

"Every penny from purchases made in the Museum shop and its online store, which covers Pokémon products, go toward the Natural History Museum’s charitable mission. This includes the efforts of 400 scientists who are scientific inquiry to discover answers to the global ecological crisis," the statement notes.
