We are checking images and video circulated this morning that show the scene of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive explosion that Russian officials state killed a high-ranking military officer in Moscow. Officials in Russia confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that detonated and that he later died to his wounds. A probe is currently ongoing. Our starting point to check the location of where the pictures were from was based on posts indicating the blast happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the capital city of Russia. We used street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex to match the unique yellow colour of a nearby apartment building captured in the video. Identifying additional buildings, lamp-posts and the road configuration confirmed where the pictures were taken. Additionally, we verified that the video clips were new and that the visuals had not undergone digital alteration.
