Vince Zampella, the mind behind the immensely successful first-person shooter Call of Duty, has tragically died in a traffic collision in Los Angeles, California he was 55 years old.

His passing was confirmed by Electronic Arts, the parent company of Respawn Entertainment, the video game company that he helped create.

The influential industry figure died after his vehicle was involved in a crash and was engulfed in flames on a freeway in LA on Sunday, US media outlets report.

"We are facing a devastating loss, and our deepest sympathies go to Vince's family, those closest to him, and the countless individuals inspired by his creative vision," an official with Electronic Arts stated.
