🔗 Share this article Yes, it's Full of Gibberish, Over-the-Top Hospitality and Psychobabble. But I Do Adore Meghan's Christmas Special. No considering the season, it's perpetually hunting season for commentary on the Duchess of Sussex's TV show, With Love, Meghan. Commentators, expert and amateur alike, have hardly ever agreed so completely as when eagerly tearing the series' earlier episodes apart. The prevailing view was that a more egregious regal scandal had seldom occurred than the much-discussed pretzel re-packaging incident. Presently, in the spirit of a holiday maverick, she makes a comeback for another round with a "Holiday Celebration" (aka a Christmas special). But this time, the dynamic has changed. The familiar ingredients audiences anticipate – psychobabble word salads, intense hospitality – persist, but framed of a holiday show, it all clicks into place. The elements have slid perfectly; it's a perfect snow storm. Now, Meghan is like the oddball family member at the typical holiday get-together – dispensing unsolicited, unnecessary advice, and delivering the odd random outburst. ("I love spinach!" … "A tradition has to have a beginning." … "A tree is part of my memory and love of the holiday season.") She's quite a personality, but her company is customary and strangely comforting. And she seems content; she's causing a bit of damage. She knows her all subtle gestures, syllable and glance will be analyzed and judged, but still appears relaxed and serenely untroubled. Maybe this is the first occasion in history where that well-worn saying – "Ignore them, they're just jealous" – might be true. Because, you know what?, all aspects in Meghan's Holiday Celebration is lovely. Yes, it's all cringily ultra-extra, nonsense and over the top – but isn't that precisely what Yuletide is all about? And the words she speaks might be absurd, but the example she sets genuinely looks shop-bought. Whatever she attempts, she executes with panache. Her cooking looks scrumptious, the holiday arrangement she makes is breathtaking, her gifts are practically too exquisite to open. Nothing is mediocre or ugly – including the way she secures her apron is artful and chic. She doesn't throw a meal in the microwave, it "goes for a spin", and she folds wrapping paper like an origami guru. She also seems to be genuinely relishing herself throughout. How could any hate-watcher not be won over, filled with seasonal cheer and left with a deep longing for handmade crackers or a vegetable display where greens is arranged in the likeness of a festive circle? Meghan had a career in acting for a living, obviously, but even so, after the degree of examination she has weathered from the moment she started dating Prince Harry, even a hypothetical offspring of two legendary actresses would struggle to act this genuinely. Her unwillingness to change or even soften her routine, despite it being so constantly, globally mocked, is strangely reassuring. In our uncertain world, here is something we can rely on: Meghan will be like this, no matter what. We will consistently know where we are with her. If you're not yet convinced by her message, a thought that will surely come as a relief: you aren't required to. The UK has abolished the draft these days, and if there were, it would be unlikely to include viewing With Love, Meghan: Holiday Celebration. If, on the other hand, you choose to watch and are consumed by jealousy about her idyllic Christmas, you can take solace either. If you are a royal or a data administrator, few children fully understands the dedication and labor their mum puts in in December. So you can find comfort by picturing the young royals' faces when they open a calligraphy note that says, 'I love you because you are brave,' from a handcrafted holiday countdown, in place of a chocolate.
